Areas of Expertise

Since admission as a solicitor Matthew has acted for leading developers, ASX listed companies and government agencies. He advises on a diverse range of issues including approvals and operating licences, development appeals, civil enforcement, judicial review and investigations by regulators regarding breaches of the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979, Mining Act 1992, Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Contaminated Lands Management Act and Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. He has appeared successfully in classes 1, 3 and 4 of the NSW Land and Environment Court.


Before joining Hones Lawyers, Matthew worked as the Policy Director and adviser to the Minister for Planning to oversee the implementation of key amendments to state planning legislation. Prior to that role he worked in private practice and extensively within the New South Wales public sector in the area of natural resource management, including at the NSW Department of Primary Industries and the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment where he was responsible for the development of natural resources legislation.


Matthew holds an LLB and Masters of Administrative Law and Policy. He is also currently completing his PhD in planning law at the University of Sydney.
